Don't stand in the plane of rotation. The abrasive discs used on chop saws, bench grinders and hand grinders will sometimes disintegrate while in use. When their wheels fail, these machines will throw sharp pieces of cutting wheel at high speed.
It happens frequently enough that you should always be alert to the possibility and avoid standing where you could get hit by flying debris.
Use the tool so that you are protected by the wheel guard or else out of plane of rotation.
